On Monday 15th of August the South East Poolies made their presence felt at the monthly quiz night hosted by the Gills. A team had to be put formed featuring some of the finest minds in the South East. After a many trials, rejections and heartaches the team was put together consisting of the only 5 members available on the night, these being as follows;
Sam Sengelow
Terry Sengelow
Simon Belsham
Stu Miller
Leigh Allen
Despite this we were confident of a good result, well confident enough for Stu, Leigh and Si to head up to their usual pub for a few liveners first. This was also a good opportunity to discuss tactics, which included;
• If all 5 of us have a separate answer, we will use the one given by the loudest member.
• Talk quietly so that other teams can’t hear our answer. (Was this seriously possible).
• If we lose lets smash the place up.
With a team and tactics like this we started off as strong favourites for success and cheapish beer at the club heightened this confidence.
The first of 6 rounds proved to be a doddle for the Oxbridge 5 and we stormed into the lead with 10 points out of 10. We would be unlucky to drop any points at all with this sort of form, we said as we asked what the prize will be.
The next 5 rounds proved to be much harder in fact and despite much deliberation over answers and simply putting anything in the space, we amassed a rather poor 17 points giving us a grand total of 27 points. This left us in a reverse play-off for last place, which I am proud to say we lost meaning that the wooded spoon went to the other team on 27 points so at least we came 2nd bottom out of 7 teams.
A great night was had by the 5 members and despite their corrupt and ability to fix quizzes special thanks must go to the GISC for inviting us and making us feel welcome.
