CAR
Leave the M1 at Junction 5 and take the A4008 into Watford. If on nearing the town centre you can't see the ground over on your left, just go left around the inner ring road (follow signs for Watford General Hospital as this is behind the ground) and you will soon spot it.
PARKING
There are plenty of private match-day car parks around the ground, costing around a fiver each. The ground is also very close to the town centre, which means you will have the option of parking there as well.
TRAIN
Watford Junction is the main station and is around a 20 minute walk. Watford High Street is closer, but less trains stop there. There is also a tube station, but this is a long journey from Central London.
Directions from Watford Junction are as follows; Leave the station & take main road straight opposite (Clarendon Road) all the way (over Ring Road at lights) up to the High Street. Turn left and go past Wetherspoons (Moon under Water) on your right and then take the first right after 100 yards into Market Street. Continue along again crossing Ring Road to T junction & then left at the chip shop. Vicarage Road is the next right turn.
PUBS/FOOD
The ground is a short stroll from the Town Centre meaning that there are many pubs and food places to choose from. Away fans should stay away from the Red Lion next to the ground. Here is some that we recommend;
William Morris Labour Club- HENBURY WAY, SOUTH OXHEY, Watford, WD19 6AP.
This is located near to Carpenders Park Station, one stop from Watford Junction. The club is run by Gregg, a lifelong Poolie, who travels all over the country watching the lads. This game is a dream come true for him and the rest of the Watford Poolies. He will be welcoming well behaved Poolies from around 11am onwards and his prices are very cheap. Standard Lagers are £1.95, Premium £2.15 and they also have a guest Czech Lager (5%) at £1.35!!!
He also has a monkey hanging above the bar, which at Midday on Saturday will be joined by Harry the Hornet!!! Yes that’s right there will be a very public hanging of Harry the Hornet with the Watford Observer Newspaper coming along to cover the story!!!
All well behaved Poolies are welcome to the club and we encourage you to come along and make a big day of it. The South East Poolies will be heading straight for here and leaving at around 1pm.
Watford Ex-Services Club- This club is a short walk from Watford Junction and is expecting a healthy following of Poolies. The South East Poolies will be heading here at around 1pm.
Oddfellow’s- This was previously called Mac’s Bar and is a few minute’s walk from the ground and welcoming away fans and children. This is a single room pub with big-screen TV’s dotted around the room. They have a pool table and beer garden, which means the nipper’s will be sorted whilst you get hammered with the lads. Expect there to Police hanging around outside in the hope that someone will buy them a drink.
Moon Under Water- A Wetherspoons pub in the town centre, which serves the usual cheap, but tasteless food as well as flat lager at good prices.
Walkabout- Lads type pub showing live football and serving food. This is an Australian themed chain of pubs so feel free to ask them to put the Ashes highlights on.
Yate’s- Located near to the Walkabout and also serves cheap food and drink as well as being good for fighting. May end up in here after the game!
There are lot of food places in the town, including some of the pubs mentioned. There is also a highly rated chip shop near to the ground.
VICARAGE ROAD- Capacity 19,900 All-Seated
The ground is quite smart on 3 sides and is becoming very enclosed by recent re-development. They are currently filling in the corners with key-worker accommodation in a similar, but larger, way to Leyton Orient. All stands are covered and the ground is very yellow!
Away fans are housed behind the goal in the Vicarage Road Stand. We have been allocated 2,000 seats and will be separated from home fans who share the stand by the usual black netting. This is a large single-tiered stand that is good for making a lot of noise. There is no alcohol for sale in the ground, so take note before leaving the pub early.
To the right is the unique and smart looking, Rous Stand. This is 2-tiered and was built in the 80’s and also houses the executive boxes at the back. The roof has a strange corrugated design.
Opposite away fans is the Rookery End, which is similar to the Vicarage Road stand but bigger. This houses the more vocal element of the home support.
To the left is the East Stand, which is now completely shut and will soon be knocked down and a new one built. This is being funded by the accommodation that has been built in the corners. This stand ruins a tidy ground, in the fact that it was obviously way past its sell-by date. It is 2-tiered and has obviously been put together over a period of time using double-sided sticky tape and other useful aids.
SAFETY
Watford fans are known to be a friendly bunch and the feel should be fairly relaxed. As mentioned avoid the Red Lion pub as this is known to be quite partisan.
SOUTH EAST POOLIES.
As mentioned above we will be heading for the William Morris Labour Club first to hang Harry the Hornet. We will be heading to the Watford Ex-Services Club at around 1pm. Please feel free to join us along the way and join in the party atmosphere. The Watford Observer will be meeting us at the first venue so make sure that you are looking your best.
We will be getting the 10.17 train from London Euston to Carpenders Park Station in order to go to the William Morris Club. We should be easily identifiable by Pools tops and loud nature of the group!
PRICE- Tickets available on the day or in advance from HUFC.
